In many schools, there is also a lack of education for what it means to eat healthy. As you may have seen in the previews to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution television show that aired this spring, students were unable to identify vegetables as common as the potato in one episode. However, after a lesson in fruits and vegetables, the students could name them easily.
One program that seeks to combat lack of food education and access to fresh produce is called Farm to School. It brings healthy food from local farms to school children across the country. According to its website, “The program teaches students about the path from farm to fork, and instills healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime by introducing children to real food.”
“Introducing children to ‘real food.’” It just seems unbelievable that as human beings, we’re even saying things like this.
